Calling all bergamot fragrance lovers!
The latest consumer research reveals that people are buying fragrance today to boost their mood. They are looking for fragrances for him or her that make them feel better – uplifting, happy aromas. So it is no surprise to see one particular ingredient trending globally: bergamot. This Italian citrus fruit is one of the most popular ingredients in both men’s and women’s fragrances today due to its clean, crisp and joyful smell. You may know this essential oil from Earl Grey tea where it is a key ingredient.
Citrus bergamani, or bergamot as it is more commonly known, is a cross between a bitter orange and a lime that creates a small green fruit about the size of an orange. It can have a green or yellow colour depending on the ripeness of the fruit. The name is derived from the Italian word ‘bergamotto’ from the Italian town of Bergamo. Some researchers say the name could also come from Ottoman Turkish ‘beg armudu’ meaning ‘prince’s pear’. The bergamot is a small citrus fruit tree that blossoms during the winter and thrives along the coast of Southern Italy where the volcanic ash provides soil full of nutrients. The juice and flesh of the bergamot are too sour to eat, but the rind provides an essential oil that is so uplifting and fresh as to inspire perfumers for generations. The oil is pressed out of the rinds producing a concentrated essential oil with a heavenly aroma.
Production of bergamot is focused in the province of Reggio di Calabria in Italy where the fruit is the symbol of the city. And while the fruit is also grown in Argentina, Brazil, Morocco, Turkey and South-East Asia, there is something special about the aroma of Italian bergamot. It has more character and nuance with a special freshness.
“One hundred bergamot fruit yield about 3 ounces of bergamot oil.”
The first documented use of bergamot oil as a fragrance was by Jean-Marie Farina in 1714 who used it as a major component of his Eau de Cologne fragrance, the world’s very first cologne. It was a light, refreshing scented water that was meant to be splashed liberally.
