As the warm summer weather makes way for cooler winds and brisk temperatures, it might be a good time to revisit your fragrance collection. We have a few Scent Lodge “change of season” tips to share with you.

Bvlgari MAN Wood Essence

Time to unpack your wood-themed fragrances

Autumn is the perfect time to bring to celebrate the great outdoors. These are often woody scents that you might have packed away during the hot summer months. These work beautifully in cooler fall weather. Look for fragrances with Atlas cedar, vetiver, sandalwood, guaiac wood and white smooth woods notes.

Indulge in sweet gourmands

It is no surprise that Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte is a best-seller this season. The decadent and creamy sweet treat with cinnamon and nutmeg is cozy and comforting. It’s the same with fragrances. Any scent with gourmand notes of vanilla, cocoa, honey, caramel, tonka bean or benzoin will wear beautifully in the coming months.

Consider best before dates

If you have the time, fall is the perfect season to take an audit of your fragrance collection. Have any of your perfumes changed colour, consistency or scent? If so, you might need to replace. Once opened, a fragrance will stay fresh for a good 12 months. After that, it can slowly degrade in quality. That is because oxygen in the bottle can cause the floral ingredients to oxidize and turn sour.

Add a layer of body lotion

Humidity levels typically begin to drop after Labour Day causing skin to become drier. And fragrance has difficulty adhering to very dry skin. For this reason, apply a layer of unscented body lotion on your skin where you want to spritz your perfume. This will create a hydrated barrier on your skin allowing your fragrance to unfold giving you longer wear. Even better, invest in a perfumed body lotion of your signature scent. This is called “layering” in perfumery and offers even longer wear.

Pack away the light citrus fragrances

Light lemon and mandarin fragrances are perfect for hot, summer months. But you might want to pack them away until spring. That is because citrus scents tend to dissipate quickly in colder, dry weather. It’s time to explore richer, warmer fragrances now.

Thank you for the tip about changing out my favourite summer time fragrances and to bring out my favourite fall fragrances. It’s one of the reasons I keep all my fragrances in their original boxes and I store all my boxes upside to help preserve the fragrance integrity. I purposely have purchased a non scented body lotion so I can create my own scented body lotion to match my fragrance. Your fragrance tips are the best.
