Five Facts about Lemon Notes in Perfumery

Five Facts about Lemon Notes in Perfumery

When it comes to summertime fragrances, there is nothing more refreshing on a hot day than the scent of fresh lemon. The bright and crisp citrus note is uplifting and optimistic and immediately reminds you of summer vacations. We’ve found five fascinating facts about this beloved perfume ingredient.

Fact 1: The scent is in the rind

It might be hard to believe but perfumers don’t use the juice or pulp when composing lemon-themed fragrances. Instead, they go right for the rind which is where the essential oil is found. The characteristic scent of lemon comes mainly from the peel where most of the odor molecules are found. To extract the scent, perfumers cold press the rind to release a rich essential oil that is blended with floral, woody and amber notes to create bestselling eau de parfums.

Fact 2: The finest lemon is harvested in Southern Italy

The combination of sunny days, mild temperatures and soil enriched with volcanic ash is the ideal formula for growing lemons for perfumery. Italy’s Amalfi Coast boasts rows and rows of lemon trees that hug the mountains along the coast. Families have been farming these special citrus groves for centuries and are hugely proud of their profession. Historians think lemons were first grown in Southern India or China, but it was the Arabs who brought this tree to Europe in the 8th century. Christopher Columbus further spread lemon seeds on his travels in 1493.

Fact 3: Aroma of happiness

Aromachology is the science of how aromas influence human behaviour and the relationship between feelings and emotions. Scientists study the effect certain aromas have on our mood and how they affect the olfactory pathways in the brain. The name is derived from the words “aroma” and “physio-psychology” and is a concept based on systematic scientific data collected under controlled conditions. Researchers are particularly interested in how scents can be used for therapeutic purposes.

Lemon scents have been the star aromas in this research. The citrus note has been shown to improve mood, improve a sense of optimism and yes, improve happiness. There is something uplifting and joyful about the scent of lemon for many people.

Fact 4: One lemon tree can produce up to 600 lbs of lemons every year

Lemon trees are one of the highest-yielding fruit trees in the world. One lemon tree can produce up to 600 pounds of lemons every year. Lemon zest, grated rinds, is often used in baking. The leaves can be used to make a fragrant tea. The high acidity of lemons makes them good cleaning aids.

Fact 5: Most popular varieties

The most common varieties of lemon include: Meyer, Eureka and Lisbon. But when buying a fragrance, you want to look for Primofiore lemon, arguably the finest (and most expensive) lemon essential oil. This lemon’s aroma is breathtakingly beautiful, both nuanced and grand. It immediately transports you to Positano in summer.
