Four Autumn Scent Trends
Autumn 2021 is promising to bring fragrance enthusiasts new scents packed with character, unusual blends and some eye-popping notes. It’s a season that celebrates individuality and unique compositions – one that shows off the artistry and creativity of the world’s top perfumers.
Scent Lodge has studied dozens of new launches arriving on store counters online in the coming eight-to-twelve weeks and identified some fascinating trends. Here are four to watch for.
Vanilla Orchid
Vanilla orchid is popping up in many new fragrances for women and for good reason. Vanilla has been a major theme in perfumery for the past five years and vanilla orchid offers a soft, floral take on the note. Vanilla orchids, also known as “vanilla bean” orchids have a light, pleasant fragrance of vanilla that is lighter and fresher than the traditional vanilla bean. They blend beautifully with other white flowers like rose, jasmine and gardenia. Watch for vanilla orchid in a new fragrance coming from Oscar de la Renta very soon.
Toffee Apple Notes
Any great perfumer will tell you that a quality fragrance is all about contrasting notes. These artists will pair sweet with sour, soft with strong, floral with woods. This is what gives a fragrance character and personality. So it isn’t a surprise that toffee apple has become a global scent trend. It combines the crisp, tart aroma of apple with a vanilla-caramel topping. The result is an accord that is both fresh and comforting. Versace Eros eau de parfum is a great example. The ingredient works in both men’s and women’s scents.
Illicit Accords
Sure Tom Ford caused a sensation when he added a cocaine accord to one of his signature fragrances, but adding scandalous illicit accords isn’t new. Yves Saint Laurent did it decades ago. As did perfumers in Venice in the 1500s. This season sees Swedish perfumer Johan Bergelin adding cannabis accord and cocaine accord to several of his 19-69 fragrances. This is one of the hottest niche perfume brands on the planet and Johan proves he’s a talent to watch. It is important to note that perfumers don’t actually blend cocaine into their perfumes. They create an ‘accord’ of other notes that together give the impression of cocaine.
Red peach
Fall 2021 is the season of the peach in perfumery. Fruit notes move in and out of style in the world of fragrance. Quite often the reason for this is cultural and based on advances in laboratories how to manipulate the ingredient in new ways. Perfumers have rediscovered the peach for the latter. If you bite into a ripe, juicy peach you know that you get a sweet, slightly tart taste and aroma. It can even be a little acidic mimicking citrus. Perfumers like it for the texture of the skin – a velvety, smooth feel that has the sensation of skin. Adding peach to a fragrance gives the scent a sense of intimacy and sexiness. It immediately makes a perfume smell more expensive and luxurious. You’ll see it used beautifully in an upcoming Bvlgari fragrance launch this fall.
