Have you ever accidentally sprayed a little too much fragrance and wondered if you could dial back the strength a little? The good news is you can. Scent Lodge has compiled some insider pro tips to help you adjust the strength of your favourite scents for any occasion.

A dab of rubbing alcohol

The easiest way to reduce the strength of any perfume is to apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a cotton ball. Then gently dab it on the skin where you applied the fragrance. By gently pressing the alcohol onto the skin, you will remove a percentage of the fragrance essential oils. This trick works on any part of your body – wrists, behind the knees, on your chest.

A makeup wipe

If you find that you don’t have any rubbing alcohol in your bathroom, a makeup wipe will help in a pinch. Just gently wipe over the skin where you applied your perfume. This will reduce the impact of the fragrance.

Boost the strength

If you find that your fragrance isn’t quite as strong as you like, you can try a few pro tricks. First of all, pull back a little from the skin you are spritzing. If you spray your wrist close to the skin, you will have a very concentrated spray on a small amount of skin. By pulling back and spritzing you spray a wider area of your skin with the perfume. This will boost the strength and longevity.

Layer on lotion

Dry skin tends to lose fragrance faster than oilier skin. So if you have dry skin, apply an unscented body lotion first. This will hydrate the skin and allow it to hold onto the perfume much longer. Simply apply the body lotion, allow it a minute to absorb and then spritz your perfume over top.

Understand scent concentrations

When it comes to perfume strength, the percentage of essential oils in a formula is paramount. An eau de toilette contains 8 to 12% essential oils. One spritz will last up to 3 hours. An eau de parfum contains 12 to 20% essential oils and will last up to 5 hours. Parfum can contain up to 40% essential oils and will last a full 8 hours. So when shopping for fragrance, consider how strong you like your fragrances. If you like strong impact, go for parfum or eau de parfum.

I love these tips. Simple and on point. I’m so guilty of spraying to close. Tomorrow, I will back up my hand when spritz my fragrance.
