Jasmine’s Serious Sex Appeal

Of the 2,500 ingredients in a perfumer’s palette, it is fascinating to learn that most scents created for evening contain jasmine. The bloom is popular worldwide which makes it even more appealing to a perfumer blending a scent that will be sold globally. Here’s why you might want to smell some fragrances containing this elegant and fragrant flower.

Jasmine is a genus of 200 varieties of shrubs and vines in the olive family of Oleaceae. The flowering plant thrives in warm temperate regions of Eurasia and Africa and is cultivated for its incredibly fragrance blooms which can be white, yellow and in rare cases reddish. The tiny blossoms bloom at night with a powerful scent giving it the name “Queen of the Night” in India. It has a rich, sweet, fruity and sensual smell. Perfumers love it because it also has a slightly animalistic edge that smells a little musky. The combination of the feminine sweetness and the masculine wildness makes the scent of jasmine universally appealing.

“Jasmine is an excellent choice for sexy evening fragrances as this precious flower is known to be…narcotic, rich and supremely feminine,” explains national fragrance trainer Melanie Caplan. “What’s interesting is that it is becoming more widely used in men’s fragrances too. One my favourites being Bvlgari’s Le Gemme Gyan.”

“The appeal of jasmine is its versatility as depending on where it is cultivated, it’s scent profile varies. This allows perfumers to create a wardrobe of jasmine-nuanced fragrances that will each be unique…while retaining those narcotic and feminine qualities.”

Throughout history, jasmine aroma has been used to help improve mood, reduce stress and even reduce food cravings. It has become a favourite ingredient for modern-day fragrances thanks to its sex appeal. And while jasmine’s meaning varies by region and culture, it often symbolizes love, beauty and sensuality.

Did you know that jasmine and rose are considered two ‘foundation stones’ of perfumery because the two blend so beautifully together. Look at the ingredient list of some of your favourite fragrances and you will likely see both rose and jasmine listed in the heart notes.

Melanie has a final thought about jasmine fragrances. “Legend has it that the jasmine flower is also an aphrodisiac. And who doesn’t want a little (or lot) of that in their fragrance?”
