When Ottavio Missoni set up a small knitwear workshop in Gallarate, Italy, in 1953, little did he know he would create one of the country’s most-identifiable fashion brands. It was famed fashion editor Anna Piaggi, then at Arianna magazine, who immediately took to the zig-zag and striped prints praising the craftsmanship and cheering on the brand at its first fashion show in Milan in 1958. When Ottavio and his wife Rosita were invited to present their collection at the Pitti Palace in Florence in 1967, Rosita told the models at the last minute to remove their bras because she felt they were the wrong colour. The Missoni fashions became transparent under the catwalk lights causing a sensation that fueled interest and sales for the company. Diana Vreeland, the famous editor of American Vogue, championed Missoni in the U.S. frequently photographing models wearing the Missoni print dresses, sweaters and jackets.

In Italy, the Missoni print is famous and still retains an unfussy, stylish chic. You will see woman carrying the zig-zag print bags, totes and wearing the jackets and sweaters.
