Renowned fragrance expert Michael Edwards has just published the first in a new series of Fragrances of the World reference books that lists an astonishing 5,000 new fragrances that debuted during 2020 and 2021. The Australian-based author is credited with being one of the world’s foremost perfume authorities having chronicled and categorized every major scent for decades. His trademarked Fragrance Wheel has been used to educate scent associates in stores around the world – helping to explain the different fragrance families. This year sees an interesting change. The term ‘Oriental’, a classification of spicy and warm fragrances has been replaced by “Amber” to be more politically correct. You’ll find scents grouped as ‘floral amber’, ‘soft amber’, ‘amber’ and ‘woody amber’.

What’s special about this fragrance guide is Edwards takes you through the evolution and development of iconic and noteworthy perfumes from 1936 through to present. You see visually how certain notes and raw materials move in and out of fashion, sometimes morphing into a new accord that appeals to a new generation of consumer. You appreciate the history and origins of many fragrance families and types. For example, Jean Patou’s 1936 fragrance “Vacances’ kick-started the green scent trend with fresh notes of galbanum, lilac, hyacinth and musk. It appealed to a fragrance fan who appreciated spending times in the great outdoors.

The description of ‘soft amber’ scents is fascinating. “Incense casts a spell on sweet spices and resins, to create softly sensual fragrances,” writes Michael. “The base notes of modern soft amber fragrances are not as sweet nor as heavy as classic amber fragrances, resulting in a soft ambery mélange of flowers and spices.”

You’ll even find a detailed Index of Parfums at the back for easy reference. The book retails for $135 USD and can be shipped to Canada. Visit fragrancesoftheworld.com for more information and to order.
