Peony Season

If you love peonies, June is the month for you in Canada. This is the season when peony buds explode into a riot of fuchsia, hot pink, blush and even purple releasing the most intoxicating aroma into the air.

Peonies are flowering plants in the genus Paeonia, small bushes that are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America. Scientist believe there are 33 species of this herbaceous plant whose blooms last a remarkably short 7 to 10 days each summer. Perfumers describe the scent of peony as sweet and rosy with a citrusy and spicy facet. In China and Japan, the peony is known as the ‘king of the flowers’ and its scent blends beautifully with rose. Fragrance houses us a process called molecular distillation to extract the delicate floral scent from the blooms.

Here are four of our favourite peony-themed fragrances:

Bvlgari Rose Goldea Blossom Delight

This gentle rose floral-musk scent for her was inspired by the freshness of rosebuds handpicked at sunrise. When the first rays of the morning sun hit the rosebuds, dewdrops give the rosebuds a fresh facet this is remarkably beautiful. This special note is blended with lily of the valley accord, uplifting grapefruit essence and peony creating a bouquet of spring flowers. White musk accord and cedarwood essence provide a smooth and elegant dry down.

Key ingredients: lily of the valley accord, grapefruit essence, peony accord, rosebud, white musk accord, cedarwood essence

Jimmy Choo L’Eau

Jimmy Choo L’Eau is an airy fruity-floral fragrance for her created by perfumer Juliette Karagueuzoglou who adds nectarine, peony and hibiscus to the original Jimmy Choo fragrance. It’s fresh and modern

Key ingredients: bergamot, hibiscus, peony, nectarine, orchid, musk, cedar

Kate Spade Sparkle

Kate Spade Sparkle is an amber-floral-gourmand scent for her created by perfumer Louise Turner who combines notes of black currant and pink pepper with peony and hawthorn. But it is the crème brulee and vanilla accord that make this scent so delicious.

Key ingredients: black currant, pink pepper, purple peony, hawthorn, crème brulee, vanilla, cedar

Moschino Toy 2

This refreshing floral-woody-musky scent for her was created by perfumers Fabrice Pellegrin and Alberto Morilla who make an impressive first impression with a burst of juicy mandarin orange and crisp apple notes. They then blend in magnolia, peony, jasmine with a little white currant for interest. Sandalwood, amberwood and musk create a soft base. It’s as light and fresh as a spring day!

Key ingredients: magnolia, white currant, Granny Smith apple, mandarin, peony, jasmine petals, sandalwood, musk, ambery woods

They could have been even more beautiful if these perfumers would omit cedar from their recipes. Cedar is not a feminine scent, it adds too much of a masculine note that to some women is unpleasant on the skin. It ruins the power of all feminine, floral perfumes. Such a shame.

I recently picked up a peony scented soap at a farmers market. I had no idea the fragrance was so intoxicating! Since ai started using it the upper floor of the house has smelled so delicious. I’m going to have to check out Rose Goldea Bloosom Delight. It sounds gorgeous.

Peony season in Ontario is one of my favourite times to watch my blooms come to life. I have 6 peony bushes in my flower gardens and always get so many compliments on their blooms. Each bush has a different aroma.
