Answers:
1 Lily-of-the-Valley or “Muguet” as it is called in French
It’s a tradition in France to offer loved ones a sprig of lily-of-the-valley on May 1st as a gesture of good fortune and luck. The exchange dates back to mediaeval times when King Charles IX received a sprig of the flower on May 1st, 1561. So taken with the gesture, he decided to return the gesture and offer the flower to every lady in his court. From then on, it became a charming tradition in France. Florists set up little booths throughout Paris on the first and sell little bouquets of muguet tied with ribbons. Some fragrance houses offer lily-of-the-valley-themed fragrances on May 1st only.
2 The bottle design
Remarkably, the design and production of perfume flacons typically take twice as long to perfect than composing the actual fragrance. Most bottles take two years to design, test and perfect. Not only does the bottle have to look beautiful, it has to stand up to shipping on huge ships that sail the globe. It has to be durable.
3 Bitter orange trees
If you have the chance to visit Southern Italy, you’ll see rows of bergamot trees growing on low hills beside the ocean. Bergamot, a cross between an orange and a lime, produces the most fragrant citrus oil for use in perfumery. But bergamot trees are very fragile. With this reason in mind, farmers plant a row of bitter orange trees close to the water. These are incredibly hardy and strong trees. The ocean winds don’t bother them at all – and they protect the bergamot.
4 Five hours
A spray of eau de parfum typically contains 18 to 20% essential oils and will last a good five hours. Perfumers recommend two sprays when applying. Never more than three.
5 The Stork Club
The Manhattan Night Club operated from 1929 to 1965 and attracted the most famous celebrities, authors and wealthy elite who considered themselves “café society”. Located at West 58th Street in New York, it wasn’t unusual to see Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the Roosevelts and Gloria Vanderbilt partying. It was the brainchild of Sherman Billingsley, an ex-bootlegger with a keen eye for promotion. “Sortilege” perfume by Le Galion, became known as the ‘fragrance of the Stork Club’. Every female guest to the club received a small vial of perfume and a tube of Stork Club lipstick as a souvenir of her visit. The line was quickly picked up by various drug and department stores across the United States. It was an overnight success.
6 Scent molecules expand when heated. So when the temperature rises in summer months, your fragrance will smell much stronger than in the winter. This is why many summer-themed fragrances are eau de toilette versions which contain less essential oils. They are lighter in concentration.
7 Jean Patou’s Joy
The French designer hired perfumer Henri Almeras to create an opulent floral scent for her with unique concentration of 10,600 flowers that included 28 dozen roses and jasmine. It became the second-best selling fragrance of all time – following Chanel No. 5. The composition opens with fragrant Jilt tuberose, luscious rose, ylang-ylang blossom, aldehydes, juicy pear and green notes. Add in jasmine, spicy iris, musk and powdery sandalwood and you have an alluring fragrance.
8 Glamazon
The amber-floral fragrance for her or him blended notes of pink pepper, Moroccan rose, amber, tonka bean and red cedar.
9. Cypress
Archeologists uncovered ruins on the island that yielded a perfumery that dates back at least 4,000 years. Funnels, bowls and stills as well as numerous perfume bottles were found at the location. Scientists found old perfume recipes at other locations on the island that revealed people of the island used myrtle, almond, coriander and local flowers in their perfumes.
10 Hailey Bieber
The model and social media star, wife of Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, flew to an isolated island off the coast of Sardinia for the beach photo shoot. She wanted the fragrance and ad campaign to celebrate the mood of summer.
11 Rose and jasmine
12 Sachets
These small cloth bags contained the same dry ingredients that went into liquid perfume. They were worn on the person or put into dressers to make both smell good. They were even sometimes sewn into clothing.
