Scent Trend: Blood Orange
There’s a new citrus note trending for 2022 and it offers a wonderful berry-like aroma guaranteed to lift your spirits. It’s Blood Orange and it comes from the Citrus Sinensis orange tree which flourishes along Italy’s southern coast. The name takes inspiration from the deep crimson flesh that is truly delicious.
Blood oranges have become incredibly popular at fruit markets and specialty grocers of late because of their hint-of-raspberry juiciness and sweet flavour. Bartenders use the juice of the fruit to compose delicious cocktails made even more striking when garnished with the deep red fruit. Surprisingly, scientists don’t know where this fruit originated – likely in the southern Mediterranean.
Perfumers have recently rediscovered this fragrant citrus for both men’s and women’s fragrances – many of which you’ll see arriving later this year. This hybrid fruit offers a warm, tangy, sweet aroma with a berry facet that blends beautifully with other citrus like neroli, grapefruit and mandarin. This is a very important fact as many ingredients clash with traditional citrus making it a challenge for perfumers to blend. Even better, blood orange pairs seamlessly with rose and geranium creating an elegant and uplifting scent.
The blood orange scent is extracted through a cold press method whereby farmers press the rinds to release the essential oil. Some perfumers are using the pulp as well but most prefer the oil. Blood orange trees are remarkably resilient to wind and weather conditions and thrive along the Italian coast where volcanic lava created fertile soil. Add in long days of bright sunshine and you have the perfect climate for blood orange trees.

March 15, 2022 at 11:03 amBlood oranges are one of my favourite oranges to eat. This past citrus season they were readily available to buy in the produce section. I make a delicious citrus salad and the blood orange is the star of the salad. I also zest the rind to use when I bake. With Spring in the air I feel I need to wear a citrus based fragrance today.
