A new generation of consumer was researching scents online, watching Youtube reviews and chatting with friends about them on social media platforms. Suddenly, the idea of actually walking into a store and spraying a scent on your wrist or on a blotter became less important.
Discovery boxes with three four or even five vial samples surged in popularity. For a small investment you could try a handful of perfumes before investing in a full-sized bottle. Subscription boxes continue to sell briskly introducing new and classic scents.
So with everyone shopping online these days, how do fragrance houses convey how a fragrance smells without having you actually smell it? Enter ingredient photo squares. These Instagram timeline boxes illustrate what key ingredients are in a scent visually. The format is quite specific. The bottle is placed in the middle and four or five ingredients are displayed around the bottle. Love rose? A photo of a rose bloom shows you that the perfume contains rose notes. Love fresh lemon? A photo of the famous Italian lemon shows you there is brisk citrus notes. Instagram is a visual medium so this format works beautifully.
Ingredient photo squares have become so successful at driving sales almost every brand is introducing them on their ecomm product landing pages, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter feeds. They are a quick and effective way to demonstrate how a scent smells. That is until we get a new technology like “Insta-Scent” where you can actually smell a perfume from your smart phone. We’re sure this technology is likely in the works.
