Famed fashion couturier Christian Dior used to tell his clients that a spritz of fragrance was the finishing touch to any of his wedding gowns. In fact, he said a woman was not dressed properly until she was wearing perfume, a tradition that all of his vendeuses in his fashion ateliers followed for years. M. Dior believed that a bride walking down the aisle should leave a sillage of perfume, a trail of fragrance.

It’s spring wedding season and that means that women and men will spend a collective $176.8 billion dollars globally on their nuptials, an amount expected to grow by 12% in the next five years. This not only includes wedding venues but cakes, jewellery, event photography, flowers, formal wedding gowns and yes, fragrance. What’s fascinating to learn is that there has been a significant rise in the overall number of weddings worldwide in the past couple of years. A younger generation is embracing marriage complete with elaborate wedding concepts.

You can thank Gen Z for putting an emphasis on wedding fragrances. This group of men and women, aged 12 to 27, are avid fragrance enthusiasts who has driven up scent sales 12% year-over-year. They consider fragrance an essential product that reflects their personality and character. And they use it to boost their mood each morning. It’s no surprise that choosing the perfect fragrance for their wedding is as important as choosing a tuxedo or gown.

So, how to you pick the perfect spring wedding fragrance? New York makeup artist Bobbi Brown has some good advice having made up hundreds of brides throughout her career. “Your wedding isn’t the time to try out a radical new makeup look,” she says. “You want to look like the very best version of yourself. And that applies to fragrance as well.” She says you want a fragrance that reflects your personal style containing your favourite notes and ingredients. A quick survey of the scents you love to wear most often will reveal some common notes: perhaps vanilla, jasmine or bergamot.

If you want to create an olfactory or scent memory of your wedding day, choose a new fragrance that you’ve never worn before. Take the your favourite notes and find a new scent that contains them all. Spritz it the morning of your wedding and then reapply in the evening. Don’t forget to add a dab behind your neck so you leave that trail of scent. By saving your scent for the wedding, you will immediately remember your special day the instant you smell it. If you decide to create a wedding photo album afterwards, be sure to spritz the first page. You’ll be amazed how it brings the photos to life.

Have you ever wondered why perfume houses and fashion designers create so many rose-themed fragrances? It’s because the rose is the flower most associated with love and romance around the world. Market research companies surveyed focus groups in almost every country around the world and the vast majority said the rose signifies endless love and romance. This makes rose-themed scents very marketable globally. Of course, the rose has a long history as a symbol for love. The sultans of Persia used to pad their mattresses with rose petals. The floors of Babylonian palaces were covered in them. Roman fountains throughout the empire were scented with rose oil. And wedding ceremonies throughout time have featured rose bouquets in churches and chapels. It’s fascinating to learn that rose oil is notoriously expensive. I used to like roses but the past 5 years of seemingly constant funerals due to C and C-related sickness have now made me associate the smell of roses with funerals. The Joe Malone one is especially evocative of yet another sad gathering. I had to give my almost full bottle of it away. It’s really amazing how smell can be associated with events.

Lily of the Valley by Pennhaligons is wonderful. Be careful if using the actual flower in a vase: enough cut lily of the valley blossoms can make the water in the vase highly poisonous.
