Move over lemon, there is a new fruit in favour with perfumers this season and it features a unique aroma. Juicy pear boasts a scent that is sweet, fruity and slightly tart making it an ideal opening top note in a fragrance. It is more subtle than lemon or mandarin with a green facet that gives it a fresh character. Some perfumers describe it as a ‘delicate’ smell that is elegant and chic.
The word ‘pear’ comes from the Latin ‘pirum’ meaning ‘fruit’. The Greeks and Romans harvested the fruit in late summer using them for preserves and desserts. During the Middle Ages, pears were considered a luxury and reserved for nobility only. Today, much of the pear production is based in France where the variety of mild climates is ideal for this tree fruit.
One of the great benefits of using pear notes in a fragrance is that the ingredient blends nicely with both flowers and woods. The fruit is particularly nice with lily-of-the-valley, rose and jasmine creating a soft, romantic mood.
Jimmy Choo Eau de Toilette incorporates pear in the top notes. It is layered over ginger, green notes, orchid, Taif rose and woods.
Oscar de la Renta Alibi POP Eau So Lucky is the latest scent to feature a juicy pear note. Eau So Lucky Eau de Toilette adds a crisp, refreshing green facet to a fruity-floral composition giving it a modern and clean character. Juicy green pear is layer over tart green apple, elegant peony and cedarwood. It’s a nice balance between sweet and tart notes, floral and earthy.
Versace Dylan Purple is a modern fruity-floral scent for her that blends juicy citrus notes with fragrant freesia and smooth woods. In this composition, the mellow pear ingredient balances the bitter orange and bergamot nicely. It also blends seamlessly with pomarose that has a fruity-rose aroma.
Jimmy Choo, Oscar de la Renta and Versace fragrances are available at Shoppers Drug Mart and shoppersdrugmart.ca Versace is also available at Sephora.
