What is a fragrance ‘bloom’?

What is a fragrance bloom?

Calling all fragrance enthusiasts! We’ve uncovered a fascinating scent fact that you may never have heard of. It’s called a ‘fragrance bloom’ and it is used across many different product categories. It’s the science of having a burst of fragrance during showering, washing your hands, washing clothes by hand or even washing your hair.

The effect is known as ‘bloom’: a build-up of fragrance intensity in-use when you add water to a product or when it comes into contact with moisture.

“Bloom is a highly desired product attribute for consumers, providing heightened fragrance impact that not only signals the product’s efficacy but also drives emotional benefits during these moments of high product engagement,” says Firmenich, the world’s number one privately-owned perfume and taste company. “We can enhance fragrance bloom via the use of delivery system technologies that are designed to release at the moment they are exposed to water or moisture.” This remarkable science is the result of six reach and development centres: Geneva, Princeton, San Diego, Shanghai, New York and Gujarat.

PolyBloom is a polymeric core shell encapsulate containing fragrance, designed to be stable in liquid body care products such as shower gels or shampoos, and then releases in-use when lathering on hands, body or hair.

FirCaps is a natural-origin, spray-dried-starch encapsulated delivery system that protects the fragrance inside from harsh bases prior to product use. Consumers experience added fragrance pleasure when handwashing clothes and taking clothes out of the washing machine, as well as added scent protection from their deodorant when needed most.

Even more exciting is the company’s Conscious Perfumery mandate to create performant and delightful fragrances made of renewable and sustainable ingredients that have a reduced carbon footprint whilst generating positive emotions, the contributing to consumers’ sustainable lifestyles.

A fragrance bloom is so interesting. This brings back memories of the shampoo Gee Your Hair Smell Nice when I was a teenager. They captured the perfect fragrance bloom. Funny how we’ve all smelt the fragrance bloom but never knew the proper name. Thank you Scentlodge 🥰
