What is a perfumed hair mist?
For decades, fragrance houses have experimented with the idea of perfumed hair mist. The practice of gently scenting your hair goes back to the turn of the 20th century when this type of product was used in between bathing days. (Only the very wealthy could afford to have a hot bath daily.) Hair mists were a way to keep hair fresh and fragrant – especially during hot, humid summer months.
The concept is back with a new twist thanks to advances in technology and ingredient development. This new generation of perfumed hair mist offers hair care benefits in an ultra-light texture that won’t weigh down hair.
To start, it’s important to understand that eau de parfums for the skin can be formulated with a high percentage of ethyl alcohol which can be drying to hair and scalp. The alcohol works to transport the essential oils in the bottle onto your skin – and it usually burns off within 15 to 30 seconds. Unfortunately, for those with sensitive skin, the alcohol can cause some irritation.
The new generation of perfumed hair mist is much more scalp and hair-friendly with a list of benefits. It’s a lightweight formula that is often water-based and can contain vitamins and minerals to soothe and condition scalp and hair. Even better, some mists can help detangle hair, control frizz and add shine. If you smell a hair mist, you’ll notice it is a less concentrated version of an eau de parfum with a more delicate scent. A spritz of hair mist will typically last three-to-four hours.
It’s important that you apply your perfumed hair mist on dry hair. When you spritz hair mist on wet hair, the water acts as a barrier and prevents the hair from absorbing the scent. For this reason, the hair mist doesn’t last as long when sprayed on damp hair.
To apply, hold the bottle at arm’s length and mist evenly through the lengths of your hair
or spray a hair brush and then brush through your hair. Hair mists should always be used as a final step in your daily hair care and styling routine
You may be surprised to learn that hair has a tendency to absorb external odours like pollution, grease, cooking smells and sweat. A perfumed hair mist can mask these unpleasant smells in between wash days without weighing it down or leaving a residue like dry shampoo can.
Whatever the reason for trying a perfumed hair mist, it’s a wonderful new way to enjoy your favourite fragrance. It’s a light, fresh concentration that offers benefits to your scalp and hair. Some of our favourite hair mists are created in Italy for Versace.
Versace Hair Mists are available at Hudson’s Bay stores, thebay.com, Shopper’s Drug Mart stores and shoppersdrugmart.ca

July 14, 2023 at 7:18 amI love spraying or dabbing a fragrance into my hands and applying to dry hair because boy oh boy does your hair absorb smells especially onions & garlic. No one likes hair that smells like dinner. So happy to read the fragrance community is producing an actual hair mist!
